Europe's tallest building - the Shard - has been inaugurated with a spectacular laser show.
The tower, which stands at 309.6m, was formally opened by the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheik Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, with the Duke of York in attendance.
The Shard was designed by architect Renzo Piano and will contain offices, hotel, luxury residences, retail space, restaurants, a spa and five storeys of public viewing space.
The inspiration of the ‘Shard’ design came from historic engravings of London where church steeples littered the skyline.
The building is clad with angled glass panes intended to reflect sunlight and the sky above, with the appearance of the building changing depending upon the weather and seasons.
