Alumno is to start work on the redevelopment of the former Southwark Town Hall next month (March), which will see the building transformed into a theatre, cafe, an artistsí studio, a roof terrace and student accommodation.
The project is located on Peckham Road in Camberwell and is scheduled for completion in August 2016.
Spread out over two floors, the aritsts’ studio will be run by the visual arts organisation providing creative workspace, Space Studios, and will be used by local artists and students. Development manager, Ron Plunz, said: “This is an excellent and rare opportunity for artists to rent affordable space in the borough.”
There are also 149 units of student accommodation included in the plan, as well as a common room.
The site to the rear will include a new home for the Theatre Peckham with dedicated rehearsal space, a large auditorium, two studios, a box office and an entrance foyer.
Alumno Developments has also been nominated in the 2014 Placemaking Awards, which take place in London on 31 March 2015.
